The Palms-Book Neighborhood
Frank Palms-Book and Herbert V. Book = Palms-Book Land Company
Although it was a black hole all but hidden in a tangle of fallen trees, John I. Bellaire fell in love with the Big Spring in the early 1920s. In 1926, through an arrangement with Frank Book who represented the Palms Book Land Company, Bellaire arranged for the sale of almost 90 acres (including the Big Spring) to the State of Michigan for $10. Deed stipulations called for the property to be forever used as a public park, bearing the name Palms Book State Park.
In 1920 by Louis Mendelssohn in the English Arts and Crafts style, Frank Palms-Book's home was built at 2939 Iroquois, Detroit and is listed on the State Historical Homes Listing.

An underground iron mine opened in 1882 by the Norwich Iron Company and later operated by the Detroit Iron Mining Company, produced 140,841 tons between 1882 and 1890. In the 1950s a shaft believed to be from the Detroit mine caved in in the front yard of a residence on Palms Avenue (US 41); the site can still be identified today be the large iron pipe vent marking the capped shaft.
