100th Anniversary Cemetery Tour

 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the Barnes-Hecker Mine disaster which occurred on November 3, 1926, in Ely Township near Ishpeming.  The tragedy remains Michigan's worst mine disaster, claiming the lives of 51 men, 41 of those men are still entombed in the collapsed mine, a solemn reminder of the region's mining heritage and the families forever changed.
Please join us at the Ishpeming Cemetery to honor the memory of, and learn about a few of the men who lost their lives underground 100 years ago.  The Barnes-Hecker Mine Disaster cemetery tour will feature surviving family members who will be stationed at or near the memorial for their ancestor.
The dates for the Barnes-Hecker Mine Disaster Cemetery Tours will be July 19, 1-4 p.m. with a rain date of July 26, and August 16, 1-4 p.m. with a rain date of August 23.
Admission is free, donations will be accepted and will benefit the Ishpeming Area Historical Society.  A map for the tour memorial sites will be available.
